The Fantastic Flight of the Silver Dart is a great book to teach young children about the first flight in Canada. When I was a child I remember learning about Orville and Wilbur Wright, but I didn’t even hear about the Silver Dart until I moved to Nova Scotia and began my own teaching career!
The story is an amazing one about how Alexander Graham Bell began an association in the early 1900’s that brought together a group of men intent on building a flying machine. In 1909, that vision became a reality and the Silver Dart enjoyed more than one flight before it was grounded.
This particular book is written with a poetic style which is sure to grab any child’s attention. The illustrations are colourful and fun to look at.
The Silver Dart is currently on display at the Aviation Museum in Ottawa. In 2009, it was brought back to Nova Scotia for it’s 100’th year anniversary. Both the museum in Ottawa and the Alexander Graham Bell museum in Baddeck, Cape Breton are a great source for more information on the Silver Dart.
